Doubletalk John Degnan
Degnan opposes tax cap
You can't have it both ways

In June of 2008, John Degnan told the Journal News:  "I have studied the Suozzi proposal... and I support a tax cap." But at the Patterson debate in July, Degnan said "I'm against the tax cap," (See the video clip on the next page). Strangely, in his in early August robocall Degnan claimed to have “… traveled to Albany... to work to pass a tax cap."  When taken to task on that particular flip-flop, Degnan proclaimed at the VFW debate in mid August (See the video on the next page): "[My opponent] has said I support a tax cap... guess what? I don't."

Finally, at the North County News debate in September, Degnan unequivocally advised voters that he opposes real tax relief for New Yorkers and opposes all of the Suozzi commission recommendations including the tax cap. But John's doubletalk is not reserved for taxes only

The powerful video below from a candidates’ forum begins with Degnan falsely claiming that the Brewster of which had been Mayor is a safe place for children and free of crime. When a Brewster resident questioned Degnan about an alleged rape of an 11-year-old boy at one of Degnan's own rental properties located in the heart of the Village of Brewster and across from Degnan’s home, Degnan says “I am proud to raise my two children in the Village of Brewster. I know my children are safe.” Upon continued intense questioning from the resident, just moments later Degnan reverses course and says, “…and yes, I do fear for the security of my family.”

In an apparent attempt to shift exclusive blame to the local judiciary for the increasing crime in Brewster during his tenure as Mayor, Degnan noted that bail had been set at  $500. Although a week after this video was shot the bail was raised to $30,000, as of October 2008 the suspect has still not been evicted from Degnan's rental property, his property located in the heart of the Village of Brewster.

Accountability

Failed Brewster Mayor John Degnan has promised that if elected to higher office, he will work to bring accountability to government. Perhaps he should first explain how his plan to quadruple taxes by installing water meters and hiking fees resulted in a million dollar accounting error! This occurred on his watch, and could have cost taxpayers millions. Read More

Pride of ownership

Failed Brewster Mayor John Degnan often speaks of pride of ownership. If he is referring to using public office for personal benefit, that could help to explain how his brother-in-law received a raise as village attorney while Degnan was in office, how his contracting firm landed village deals, or how his nonprofit received an official village partnership. Respectability

Failed Brewster Mayor John Degnan swore to run a positive campaign based on issues, yet after all this time, no one knows where he stands. All that's left is his record of failures and a vague statement about returning respectability to government. Why, then, has he been publicly attacking veterans who were restructured into the reserve?. Read More
