Page 2 of 2 “John Degnan’s alleged involvement in the silencing of a police department whistleblower should send a shudder down the spine of anyone who believes in the importance of governmental openness and accountability,” said Adam Kramer, Spokesman for the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee (RACC). “Whistleblowers play a critical role in exposing instances of corruption and malfeasance within the public sector. That John Degnan would try to punish a police officer who had raised legitimate questions is something he should be prepared to explain to voters. Ours is a government of laws, not of men. John Degnan would be well served to try to remember this. If the voters can’t trust John Degnan as Mayor, why would they elect him to the State Assembly?” Kramer concluded.
Nearly all of the New York Times, Journal News, and Putnam Courier headlines during Degnan's tenure as Mayor of Brewster were stories about crime. "Big city crime is coming to Brewster," "Illegal immigrants plead guilty to Brewster murder," "Men accused of having sex with teens," "Two Brewster men face rape charges," "Three day laborers held in armed robbery," "Crime spike negatively affects property values," "Case continued for Brewster men charged with statutory rape," "Man stabs brother after argument in Brewster," "Second homeless Guatemalan found dead in woods," and "Brewster man held in slaying" are just some of tragic summaries of Brewster's recent tumultuous history. All suspects who are alleged to have committed the heinous acts were in the United States illegally.
